The University of Abuja was established in January 1988 but academic activities started 1990 with matriculation of pioneer students. The University started with four Faculties Education, Arts, Law and Science. Its formation was informed by the imperative to provide an institution of higher learning within Nation Capital City Abuja and its environment whose objectives would be in line with the ideas that informed the conception of the city by Federal Government. The University’s National outlook means; it would also be made accessible to all the states of the Federation as a melting pot and unity of Nigeria as an indivisible entity.
The University was formed with the dual mode to provide regular or conventional academic programme and Center for Distance Learning and Continuing Education (CDL & CE) Programmes. CDL&CE programmes have long been in existence before the creation of the University. In 1976 the National Universities Commission conceived the idea of an Open Universities with a view to providing for the yearning education needs of Civil/ Public Servants and employees in the country who could not afford to leave their jobs to engage in full time studies.
However, the need to establish a Conventional University in the Federal Capital Territory became necessary resulting in the establishment of University of Abuja. The Open University was then merged with the new University and the Act establishing the University made it possible for the University of Abuja to run both the full-time regular conventional Programmes and the Continuing Education and Distance Learning Programme. (CDL&CE)
